My biggest Little One has started making clothes for her new doll . To speed up the process, we thought we'd give the sewing machine a try. But first, some practice - with paper. I set her up and left her to it. Ahh...a few minutes peace to grab a cuppa. Bliss. Alas, no, the little perfectionist in her couldn't quite cope. Within minutes I was confronted by a very anxious and distraught little girl - she just couldn't follow the lines. It was too hard!
I took a look at her stitching, expecting wildly wonky lines - however she was within millimetres of each line. A seasoned sewer would have been happy with the efforts. So today's lesson wasn't about sewing at all - but how to deal with perceived failure and perseverance. After recovering from her 'not quite perfect' attempts at straight lines, I left her with a handful of blank paper where she free styled it for pretty much the rest of the day. Happy as a clam. No pressure to 'get it right'. By the end of the day, she was much more confident with the machine, and was getting quite good at controlling the 'fabric' and the speed of her sewing.
So, depending on what your Little One is like - grab some paper draw some lines and get them to trace the lines with the sewing machine, or just let them run wild with their own creativity and free style some sewing machine art.
Or you can download these printables I've created for your Little One to practice on - and even have fun colouring in after sewing.
